SUBJECT: SOFTWOOD LUMBER IMPORTATIONS
AS OF MARCH 31, 2001, AT 11:59 P.M. EASTERN STANDARD TIME, THE
U.S./CANADA SOFTWOOD LUMBER AGREEMENT (SLA) EXPIRED. HOWEVER, IMPORTS OF
CANADIAN SOFTWOOD LUMBER CONTINUE TO BE A CONTENTIOUS TRADE ISSUE.
THOUGH THE SLA HAS EXPIRED, THE TRADE COMMUNITY IS REMINDED OF THEIR
OBLIGATION TO EXERCISE REASONABLE CARE, AS SET FORTH UNDER SECTION 484
OF THE TARIFF ACT OF 1930, AS AMENDED (19 U.S.C. 1484), WHEN ENTERING,
CLASSIFYING, AND VALUING IMPORTATIONS OF SOFTWOOD LUMBER MILL PRODUCTS.
THIS WILL ENABLE CUSTOMS TO PROPERLY ASSESS DUTIES, COLLECT ACCURATE
STATISTICS AND DETERMINE THAT ANY OTHER APPLICABLE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
ARE MET.
