SUBJECT: INCREASED SURVEILLANCE OF PAPAYAS FROM MEXICO

FDA is informing US importers of intended increased surveillance of papayas imported from Mexico.

Recent analytical results of samples of Mexican papayas indicate an elevated number of microbiological contamination violations, specifically salmonella violations. These findings have led FDA to issue guidance to our field offices for an immediate increase in surveillance sampling of Mexican papayas. We are taking these measures to provide better protection to US consumers of these products.

Importers of Mexican papayas should expect delays in FDA releases for Mexican papayas, as we increase the rate at which entries are sampled by FDA for microbiological analysis. The guidance issued includes means to lessen the surveillance of shipments from growers with repeated non-violative analytical results.

FDA will adjust our surveillance guidance as indicated by the results of this increased sampling.
